Oct 25 - Human Rights, International Law, Occupation

An evening event held at the Law School, “Human Rights, International Law and the Israeli Occupation of Palestine,” featured Michael Lynk, a Law Professor at Western University in Canada, and the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories Occupied Since 1967. Introduced by Katherine Franke, CU Law Professor and CPS faculty member, the event comprised comments by Katherine Gallagher of the Center for Constitutional Rights, Jamil Dakwar of the ACLU, and Michael Sfard, an Open Society Fellow.

The occasion was the upcoming publication (Oct. 27) of Rapporteur Link’s first Report to the General Assembly of the UN. The approach of his report concerns Israel’s “breaching Palestine’s Right to Development,” which references a general human right established by the General Assembly in 1986 in its “Declaration on the Right to Development,” which explicitly also covers occupied territories.
